Dave Melton (Coach)

Birth Date: 1947-05-29
Deceased Date: 2021-12-18
Obituary:
David Fredric Melton, age 74, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2021, surrounded in love by his wife of 52 years, Sandy Melton, and his two children, Matthew Melton and Heather Melton Fox.

Dave was born on May 29th, 1947, to John and Martha Melton in Denver, Colorado. In 1965, he graduated from Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colorado where he was a star baseball and basketball player. He went on to play baseball on pitching scholarships throughout college and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in education.

In 1969 he married Sandy Longhofer. In 1972 their first child, Heather Ann Melton, was born. Five years later, they welcomed their son, Matthew David Melton. Dave made a 30-year career out of his life-long passion for teaching and coaching - the majority of which was spent at Hinkley High School. He was a very winning and successful coach. But nothing gave his work more meaning than including a student who felt excluded, or helping a young person reach the potential they couldn't yet see in themselves.

He was an excellent and avid golfer. After he left teaching, he secured for himself what he thought was the "coolest retirement job in history" with the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT). For the next twenty years, he would get to play the best golf courses in the country "on the clock" and continue to mentor young people on the many lessons sports have to teach us about life.

As a father, he and his wife instilled in their children the importance of standing up for fairness and justice and of treating everyone equally regardless of their particular circumstances. He lived his life in order to make the most room for the things that mattered most to him. He shared his pride in and love for his family and friends all of the time and for no particular reason. As a result, no one was ever left to wonder how much they meant to him. Dave loved to tell stories and make people laugh. His enthusiasm about life and his genuine interest in others made him fast friends with nearly everyone he met.

But anyone who knew Dave for any length of time knows that nothing brought him and Sandy more pride and joy than their two grandsons, Cru and Beck. Walking on the beach in Mexico with Cru to gather "materials" for a fort and being "Monster Dave" at the constant request of Beck, made him as happy as anything in his entire life ever had.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Martha Melton. He is survived by his wife Sandy Melton, his daughter Heather Melton Fox, his son Matthew Melton, Matt's wife Eliane Ste. Marie, their two children Cru Melton and Beck Melton, sister Sally Melton, brother Tom Melton, sister-in-law Jill Melton, brother-in-law Carl Longhofer, sister-in-law Wynette Longhofer, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dave was one of the four people who started the original junior golf program in Aurora. Over the course of 20 years he taught countless kids, including his own two children, to play the game he loved. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dave's name to the Paul McMullen Golf Scholarship Fund And sent to: City of Aurora Golf Division, Paul McMullen Golf Scholarship Fund 15151 E. Alameda Parkway Suite #4600 Aurora, CO 80012.

Bob Hinton (Coach/Teacher)

Birth Date: 1942-02-18
Deceased Date: 2012-12-12
Obituary:
Robert Barr Hinton was born shortly before midnight, February 18, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John Walter and Eda Dorothy (Barr) Hinton. A few minutes later, just after midnight on February 19, he was joined by his twin brother, Thomas D. Hinton.

The family lived in Clairton, Pennsylvania, for the next several years. Bob had a great time swimming at the lake, biking in the forest, sledding and visiting their cabin in the mountains. He always had his best friend, Tom, and their cocker spaniel, Sandy, for companionship.

His dad’s military career took the family to San Antonio, Texas, when Bob was in 6th grade, followed by a move to the Denver area where Bob attended Morey and Hill Middle Schools and East High School. Bob wrestled, competed in track and played football at East High School. He was very successful in the football program and was named to the All City Team and selected for the All Star Football Game during his senior year.

Bob earned a football scholarship to Colorado State University where he majored in Physical Education, Health and Recreation. He signed on as a free agent with the Washington Redskins following his career at CSU. He made it through the preseason and was kept on the Redskins’ Farm Club, the Wheeling Ironmen, for one season.

After his release from the Redskins organization, Bob married Alice Scott, in December, 1965. He then taught physical education, coached football and wrestling and managed a swimming pool during summers in California until 1969. After the birth of their first daughter, Laura, in 1969, the family returned to Colorado where Bob had been hired as a physical education teacher and football and wrestling coach at W. C. Hinkley High School. In 1970, their second daughter, Leslie, was born.

Bob continued to teach and coach at Hinkley High School until his retirement from teaching in 1997. He continued to coach football until 2007 and he substitute taught until 2010 when he suffered a stroke. Bob was honored to be selected as one of the coaches of the 1993 All State Football Game. A major highlight of his coaching career was achieving his goal of winning the Class 4A State Football Championship in 1997.

In 2007, Bob and his brother, Tom, were selected by the football officials association for the Ben Gregory Award. This award is presented annually to a retired coach who is a facilitator of sportsmanship toward opponents as well as officials. It was special for Bob to have the opportunity to coach with Tom the last years of his coaching career. Bob was an avid weightlifter and he lifted weights, bicycled and exercised on a treadmill several days a week right up until he had the stroke. Although he had many setbacks, Bob worked very hard at rehabilitation with the goal of regaining his ability to walk. He maintained a positive attitude and kept his great sense of humor until he passed away.

Bob was a loving husband and father who devoted his life to his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He had a very special bond with his twin, Tom, and he was deeply loved by his extended family of in-laws. Bob was also devoted to his teaching and coaching career at Hinkley where he loved the staff and students as if they were extended family. With his great sense of humor and compassionate, gentle, generous and loving nature, he quickly made friends throughout his life.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John Walter (Jack) and Dorothy Hinton. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice, his daughters, Laura Teague (Gary) and Leslie Baumgartner (Curtis), and his twin brother, Tom (Jan). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Shelby, Tucker and Charlee Jo Teague and Sydney, Taya, Braden and Tanner Baumgartner. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Karen Scott and Flori Hamilton (Ray) and his brother-in-law, Phillip Scott (Linda) and nephews and nieces Bobby Hinton, Robin Assmus (Rick) and Mikayla and Michael; CW Scott (Melissa) and Casey and Samantha; John G. “Colonel” Scott (Barbara) and Demri; Kevin Hamilton and Kev and Payten; Kent Hamilton (Marisol) and Sydney and Kasey; and Jennifer Hamilton and Karley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Bob Hinton Memorial Fund, c/o William C. Hinkley High School, 1250 Chambers Rd., Aurora, Colorado 80011.
